Expose and Bond Post-Op Instructions
What can I expect after surgery?
- Minor bleeding and “oozing” for 1-2 days.
- Pain and discomfort slowly improving in 1-5 days.
- Swelling for 1 week becoming worse on the 2nd and 3rd day after surgery.
- Tightness and stiffness to the jaw and joint areas.
- Your surgeon has attached a small gold chain to the impacted tooth, it is essential that your orthodontist activates the chain within the first week or two after your surgery. If this chain becomes dislodged from the tooth, please contact our office as soon as possible to have the chain replaced.
- If sutures (stiches) are placed, they are almost always they type that will dissolve and fall out within first week or so after surgery.
Making Every Visit Comfortable, Precise, and Effective
What are my post-operative instructions?
- After the first 24 hours following surgery, rinse gently with warm salt water after every meal. This can continue 1-2 weeks. Brush gently avoiding the surgical sites for 1-2 weeks.
- You may be biting on gauze when you leave the clinic. This gauze should remain for 30 minutes. After that, you may take the gauze out and observe the extraction area. If it is bleeding like a fresh wound (bright red, dripping blood) bite on additional fresh gauze for approximately 30 more minutes. Repeat as necessary until the area is slight oozing and blood is dark & clotting. Remember a little blood and a lot of saliva will look like a lot of blood, usually it is just a lot of saliva.
- Do not smoke, spit, drink through a straw, or drink carbonated beverages for 3 days after surgery.
- If antibiotic mouthwash (Chlorhexidine) is prescribed, wait 24hrs to start using it. When you do start using it, gently swish for the first 2-3 days to avoid disruption of the blood clot.
What should my activity level be?
- If you have received IV sedation do not drive for 24 hours or while taking Narcotics.
Are there diet restrictions after surgery?
- Your first day will consist of soft, cool foods such as: Jello, pudding, yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese and ice cream. Soup is fine as long as it is room temperature only. Around day 3-4 you may resume regular diet as tolerated, but should your jaw start to ache, resume soft diet for a couple more days to rest the jaw muscle.
How do I manage pain after surgery?
- After oral surgery procedures, pain is best managed with scheduled doses of NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen (up to 3200 mg daily) and Acetaminophen (up to 3000 mg daily).
- If you are prescribed Ibuprofen 800mg, then alternate that with over-the-counter Acetaminophen (Tylenol 500mg) every 4 hours. For example, Take Ibuprofen 800mg at 12 o’clock then take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500mg 4’clock then Ibuprofen 800mg again at 8 o’clock. Continue alternating between the two every 4 hours.
- If you are prescribed Ibuprofen 600mg, then alternate that with over-the-counter Acetaminophen (Tylenol 500mg) every 3 hours. For example, Take Ibuprofen 600mg at 12 o’clock then take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500mg 3’clock then Ibuprofen 800mg again at 6 o’clock. Continue alternating between the two every 3 hours
- In addition to the above medications, short term opioids (oxycodone or hydrocodone) may be prescribed by your provider. We recommend that you limit opioid use to instances when you feel severe pain (8/10 or more) despite scheduled doses of NSAIDs and acetaminophen
- Use of opioids (even short-term use) may lead to physical dependence and addiction.
- To dispose of used opioids, return to opioid take back clinics or pharmacies. You can also mix it with coffee grounds in a sealed bag and dispose of it in the garbage. Do not flush the opioids down the drain.
When should I call my doctor?
- If you have increased swelling or bruising, severe or increased pain not relieved by medication.
- If you have any side effects to medications such as rash, nausea, headache, vomiting, increased irritability, or constipation.
- If you have an oral temperature over 100.5 degrees. Check to make sure you are getting enough liquids. Dehydration can cause the body temperature to rise.
Who should I call if I have questions?
- If you have questions during normal business hours please call 706-860-8228

I had my wisdom teeth removed here recently, and I can't say enough good things about my experience! The staff were super welcoming and very nice. The office was clean, modern, and had a calming vibe. The anesthesia worked perfectly, and I don’t even remember the procedure! The surgeon called to check on me the day after surgery, which was a nice touch and showed they truly care about their patients. I was impressed by how professional, efficient, and friendly the entire team was. I’d definitely recommend this office to anyone needing oral surgery.Posted on Google![]()
